There are books that you finish reading and think, "That was nice."
and then there are books where you finish reading and have to sit there for a minute wondering what exactly just happened to your standards.
X Marks the Stalker by K.N. Wilder falls firmly into the second category.
If you like your romance with questionable decisions, obsessive energy, a seriously unhinged atmosphere, and enough red flags to decorate an entire football field, this one may have exactly the kind of chaos you are looking for.
and honestly?
It gave me "Butcher & Blackbird meets Lights Out" energy.
and you all know how absolutely feral for those books I am!
🔪So what exactly is X Marks the Stalker about?
At its core, X Marks the Stalker is exactly what the title promises. A dark romance centered around obsession, stalking, and two characters who are definitely not operating under the traditional rules of romance.
The story follows Oakley Novak, a crime journalist, and Xander Rhodes, a mysterious and obsessive ma whose interest in Oakley goes considerably beyond the normal "I think she's cute" variety.
We are talking about characters who have absolutely no business making some of the decisions that they make. Which, as a dark romance reader, is precisely where things get interesting.
🖤 The Vibes
If I had to bottle the overall vibe of this book, I'd label it:
Dark. Unhinged. Funny. Obsessive. Slightly feral.
There is a delicious tension running through the story, but it is not so relentlessly dark that there's no room to have fun with it.
The balance was one of my favorite things. You can have something deeply questionable happening and then suddenly find yourself laughing because of the characters' personalities or the banter. That combination is a huge reason that the Butcher & Blackbird meets Lights Out comparison popped into my head while reading.
If you know, you know.
If you don't know, just take that as your warning label.
👀 Oakley & Xander
The chemistry between Oakley and Xander is a huge part of the appeal.
Xander brings the obsessive, possessive energy that you'd expect from a stalker romance MMC, while Oakley is absolutely not the kind of FMC who is going to sit around quietly and let the story happen to her. Their dynamic creates a really entertaining push and pull, and I loved the way that their personalities played off one another.
There is something particularly fun about a romance where you can look at both characters and think:
"Neither of you should be trusted with adult decision making."
and yet....
I was very invested.
🍬Emotional Support Candy
We need to talk about Oakley's candy obsession.
Not because it's some giant plot point I'm about to spoil for you. Quite the opposite, actually. It is one of those little character details that made the book so much more entertaining for me.
Oakley has what I can only describe as an emotional support candy system, and I genuinely found myself cackling over it throughout the book.
Some people cope with stressful situations by journaling. Some people meditate. Oakley has candy.
Honestly though?
I respect the energy.
Her relationship with candy became one of those little character quirks that kept making me smile, and it was a fantastic bit of levity in a story that deals with some much darker subject matter.
I won't tell you why the candy comes into play or give away any situations surrounding it. You'll have to discover those for yourself. Just know that the candy deserves a supporting character credit. 🍭
😂 Dark Romance With a Sense of Humor
If you know me, you know that I am a BIG fan of humor. One thing I really appreciated about X Marks the Stalker is that it doesn't take itself so seriously that the darker elements swallow everything else. There is dark romance, but there is plenty of humor sprinkled throughout.
The banter, character quirks, and overall absurdity create moments where you're reading something objectively unhinged and find yourself suddenly thinking:
"Should I actually be laughing right now?"
That balance made the book a lot more fun for me. If you enjoy dark romance that can embrace its darker side while still giving you moments of humor, this is definitely one to consider.

The romance is definitely an important part of this story, but I appreciated that there is plenty happening around the relationship as well.
You've got suspense, dark themes, humor, character dynamics, and plenty of tension woven into the reading experience. So if you want your romance with a little more going on than meet cute → feelings → happily ever after, this one has considerably more personality.
